Making our fireplace and built in cabinets Part 3

In part 3 it's all about the side built ins! We were lucky enough to have the chipboard already to make the base cabinets form a previous bargain find which helped us save some money on this project.

Matt found a house that was being demolished and paid $60 for 2 built in wardrobess, insides and doors. We are only using the mirror doors for our kids rooms so had all the insides left to build the cabinets.

Base cabinets have gone in and next was the shelves. We first built the shelves as 1 unit on the ground, planned to pick it up and sit it on top but unfortunately the craft wood was so heavy that the boards were splitting were the nails had been shot in on the sides..... so we scrapped that design and ended up cutting pieces and making boxes. That way we would end up with no sagging shelves and wouldn't need battens.

After all shelves were finished we made a trim and side (end) board to finish it off.

Lastly the moulding went on the top. This was the moulding from our old kitchen that we saved.

The other side was pretty much the same but with a spot for our TV.

The space where the TV goes was built off the wall so the TV didn't sit so far back, battens that are screwed into the wall studs were used behind the craft wood so the TV bracket could be screwed to them.

Matt also made shaker style doors to go on the cabinet.

I had the fun job of patching and sanding 😆

We Sprayed the primer with a fine mist paint gun we purchased from Bunnings, but it was really hard getting in all the nooks so in the end I ended up painting it with little rollers.

All done! Next for this room is the board and batten and painting the doors white.

Thanks for stopping by!
