DIY DEER SILHOUETTE CHRISTMAS CUSHION

Good morning!! I had such a big response and questions on how I made My deer cushions on Instagram I thought I’d share…. I did happen to take a few pictures while making them....I’m not the best at giving instructions but hopefully a lot of pictures will
help. Making cushions is fairly simple and straight forward……once you master zippers. I’ve never done piping on a cushion before, I’ve done it on my bed when I reupholstered it (read about that here) so I thought I’d give it a go.
Firstly I found a picture years ago on Instagram I’ll share it with you unfortunately I can’t remember whos page it was off…. Isn’t it so cute!!

I Found a similar pillow on Pintrest from http://www.homesweetruby.com she did a no sew verson which looks great! I also found a link to another blogger from her page to get the free deer template – http://www.jennycollier.com

I needed to blow the template up on to make it the correct size for the cushion which I did on my printer scanner.
You will need:
bleached cotton canvas, christmas fabric (I used a christmas plaid fabric from spotlight), piping cord and invisible zipper and fabric adhesive spray.
I had to buy fat quarters because spot light didn’t sell this particular fabric by the meter.

I traced out my deer on the fabric

I was making 2 so I doubled it up before I cut it out20171112_151134

I then measured up my cushions and cut them out. I wanted 45*45 so I marked out 47*47cm for seam allowance20171112_154159
I then laid out the deer to get the correct placement and using a water soluble fabric pen I marked out where to line the deer back up once I sprayed it with fabric adhesive.20171112_155006
I was hoping the fabric adhesive would be enough to stick this on and I wouldn’t have to sew it on but nothing is ever that simple!! It did start to come un stuck so I ended up zig zaging it on which was a pain in the butt!20171112_191815
All stitched on!20171112_191820
Next was the piping, I had to make joins in my strips that the cord goes in because I needed it to be about 2 meters long to go around the outside of the whole cushion.20171112_191840
Tip….. when sewing strips together sew on the 45 because it looks less bulky when the cord goes in….. Pics below20171112_192526

Then I cut off excess and ironed the seam flat20171112_192755
Using the zipper foot to attach  the piping on the front side of fabric, sewing quite close to the cord inside.20171112_194122
Once I made it around to where I started I sewed the ends together and taped the cords together and finished sewing it on.20171112_195545
The next step is sewing zipper on and stitching both sides of cushion together…. unfortunately  that’s the end of the pics it was late and i was determined to finish off before going to bed and forgot to take pics, but go on you tube and watch away their are heaps of video on making cushion with piping and sewing zippers on piped cushions.
here’s how the zipper ended up looking! It was quite fiddly with the piping but ended up looking ok

The end product!! Turned out pretty good I must say🙂
